Workshop Motivation & Scope
The Standardization Committee at ISMAR 2025 has been established to strengthen the continuous collaboration between academic research and standardization efforts, with the goal of enhancing the value of both. By promoting the development and dissemination of coherent, widely adopted standards along with standardized tools, methodologies, datasets, and benchmarks, these efforts aim not only to ensure rigor and interoperability across XR domains, but also to bridge the persistent gap between academic inquiry and social implementation. XRStand: 1st International Workshop on Standardization in XR has been designed as a concrete initiative to advance the mission and vision of the ISMAR 2025 Standardization Committee. This workshop welcomes contributions and discussions related to a broad interpretation of standardization in XR. We aim to highlight not only formal standardization initiatives, but also community-driven efforts, tool development, and conceptual frameworks that support the advancement and social implementation of immersive technologies.
The XRStand 2025 workshop welcomes participation from:
- Academics & Researchers, who wish to expand and elaborate their research by gaining insights from standardization and industrial applications.
- Industry Practitioners & Innovators, who wish to contribute to the development of industry standards necessary for practical work while gaining exposure to the latest practical research presented at ISMAR.
- Standardization Organizations & Consortia, who wish to gain knowledge of academic breakthroughs, the current state of prototype system implementations, and evaluation results in real-world scenarios at ISMAR to make their standards and standardization activities more beneficial.

- Activities involving Open-source projects, APIs, and tools that advance interoperability and reproducibility across XR applications.
- Terminology definitions, taxonomies, and conceptual frameworks in XR (e.g., Reality–Virtuality continuum), including reflections inspired by the ISMAR 2024 panel “xR is Dead, Long Live XR!”.
- Explorations and overviews of forum standards, de facto standards, and de jure standards, and their roles in shaping XR ecosystems.
Submission Guidelines
Submissions must follow the IEEE VGTC formatting guidelines and will be peer-reviewed based on relevance, originality, and contribution diversity. XRStand invites full-length and short‐format papers (up to 4 pages, excluding references). Acceptable formats include:
- Research Papers: describing novel XR work with an explicit standardization angle.
- Survey & Vision Papers: overviews of existing XR standards, taxonomies, or roadmaps.
- Position papers: reflecting on a conceptual challenge in XR standardization.
- Project papers: reports on community-driven or industry-led standardization efforts.
All accepted papers (up to 4 pages, excluding references) will be published in the ISMAR 2025 Abstracts & Workshop Proceedings and made available via the IEEE Xplore Digital Library. At least one author from each accepted submission must register for the workshop and present their work at XRStand.

Accepted manuscripts will be accepted as posters, and all presenters are expected to give a lightning talk before their poster presentation. Acceptance does not restrict future publications authors may present extended or modified versions of their work as full papers, short papers, or journal articles, provided they include significant new contributions beyond the original workshop submission. The review criteria will include but not limited to Originality; relevance to workshop themes; technical rigor or conceptual clarity; potential impact on XR community.
Review decisions are final. Authors of accepted papers will need to submit a revised version that addresses the feedback provided in the reviews before official acceptance to the workshop.
